5 Bad Beauty Habits You Need to Stop Today

When it comes to bad beauty habits, we can all admit that we’ve fallen by the wayside at one point or another without even realizing it but the first step in resolving them is recognizing and admitting that there is a problem and when you know better, you do better; so whether you’ve been picking at a pimple or sleeping on dirty pillow cases unwittingly, here are some of our top five bad beauty habits that should stop.

  1. Using too many skincare products

If you listen to what marketers tell you, you will most likely end up with a bathroom full of skincare products that you barely know how to use because at any given point, there is always someone trying to sell us a beauty product with the promise of “better looking skin”. The key is to go for quality and not quantity; simplify your beauty products and you will notice that this is not only good for your skin but good for your budget as well. Using too many skincare products is asking for trouble, the effects may not show up overnight but this can lead to collagen breakdown, breakouts, acne and other auto-immune responses.

  1. Sleeping on dirty pillow cases

Dirty pillow cases are usually covered in hair oil and dust all of which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts; granted doing your laundry every other day is not fun, it is advisable to switch your pillow cases every three days to keep your skin clear and acne free.

  1. Picking at blemishes

While it can be tempting to squeeze and pop that annoying pimple, the reason why this is a bad beauty habit is because a pimple is an inflamed lesion filled with bacteria and squeezing it can cause more damage to the delicate skin resulting in not only a scar but even more breakouts which is probably the last thing you want.

  1. Too much heat styling

Overuse and misuse of heat styling tools does more harm than good; blow-dryers, straightening and curling irons are great for our daily styling routine but most people tend to forget using a heat protector which is important as it prevents your hair from burning/breaking during the straightening process. It is recommended to give your hair a break from heat styling; there a couple of options you can go for when looking for bouncy curls e.g. using flexi rods or even bantu knotting.

  1. Touching your face

This is one habit that is hard to quit especially because we don’t even realize when doing it. It’s important not to touch your face often as you will tend to transfer oil, dirt and grime that have been sitting on your hands onto your face. The bacteria on your hands could lead to serious breakouts so keep your hands clean and definitely try to keep them off your face. A great tip to ensure your hands are off your face is wearing foundation, you will naturally be more conscious about rubbing off your makeup with your hands and this will serve as a reminder to keep your hands out of your face.
