Lalesso have us wishing that the sun could be out sooner. The luxury African fashion brand was founded by Olivia Kennaway and Alice Heusser who got their inspiration from the East African khanga fabric popularly known as lesso while on a trip to Lamu and decided to create Lalesso. Another compelling reason to start the brand was the fact that 50% of the Kenyan population lives below the poverty line and they decided to use their business to help provide skills training, create employment with a fair wage that will not only aid survival but also allow them to considerably improve their standard of living.
Lalesso also has production ties to the reputable sustainable factories Soko www.soko-kenya.com and Wildlife Works www.wildlifeworks.com, both situated in Maungu, Kenya and highlighting this brand today couldn’t come at a better time as the UNCTAD conference which advocates for sustainable trade and development is currently ongoing.
Lalesso is known for vibrant contemporary designs ideal for summer and as the brand develops so does the patterns and prints they choose to explore which was evident in their latest S/S 2016 collection. The collection features flowy long dresses, playsuits, jumpsuits, skirts, shirts and culottes all with a khanga inspired print where the patterns have taken more of a clean modern geometrical twist. The pieces have also been inspired and named after Swahili words such as dirisha, kengele, zaidi e.t.c
